Mental pollution in the cities,
Are there two worlds in every country?

Big city people with their concerns, their media,
Turned inward, their sophisticated intrigues the whole world.

In the village there are intrigues too,
But the voice of the sky and earth can also sometimes be heard.

In America's west there are also the free places, open spirit,
But I wonder if there are any unbroken villages yet,
Where people have lived for generations?

Did they all lose out to urban migration,
Green and industrial revolutions, dust bowl, depression, baby boom?

The green revolution poisoned our rivers, water table for ever,
Industrial revolution cancer, barren mines, brown spaces, pollution.
Anti-tradition revolution, broken families, crime, depression, widespread lonliness,
Urban migration, uncontrolled development, conjested cities, abandoned towns.

When some technology or method has proved too dirty and
Damaging for us we export it abroad, extolling its benefits:
Having tea parties for villagers where we tell them spray
Chemicals, better than green or brown manure.

When we learn through experience that a method brings destruction,
Using our greater material wealth as our proof,
What greater sin than exporting it to all the world!
